The location isn't the only sticking point. The other is that Environmental Defense recently released a report on the Alberta Oil Sands, calling it the most destructive project. ON EARTH.

Couple of stats:

-Oil sands mining is licensed to use twice the amount of fresh water that the entire city of Calgary uses in a year.

-At least 90% of the fresh water used in the oil sands ends up in ends up in tailing ponds so toxic that propane cannons are used to keep ducks from landing.

True enough, John. There are lots of environmental issues associated with the oil sands. But Suncor has a well-earned reputation as an environmental leader and spends a lot of time and money to mitigate the impacts of its operations. Here's a link to Suncor's most recent sustainability report: http://www.suncor.com/data/1/rec_docs/1398_SD%20Report%2007(new)white.pdf

All oil sands projects go through intensive environmental impact assessments and community consultations before they are allowed to proceed, and they have reclamation plans designed to return the land to the equivalent of its original state when mining is complete.

Some of the most environmentally aware people I know are in the energy industry, working from the inside to address the problems and change things for the better.

For an employee communicator, the environmental issues are one more element that would add to the challenge.
